Unfortunately in the design or artistic fields in order to break through you mite have to volunteer your services to a company. You would also have to make yourself a portfolio so they could see your potential. What ever you do, do not get discourage.

There's no easy way to get experience, except by getting it!!
Here's what I'd do to get going:
I'd seek out a number of charitable, community or other non-profit organizations in your area and offer them to prepare them a flyer, newsletter, event program, ad or whatever they need FOR FREE. These organizations are always on the lookout to cut costs and yet need to produce high-level material that can "sell" their projects. They would provide you with the text, photographs and any other material and they'd only have to pay for printing costs.
If they ask why you're doing it for free tell them that you like what their organization does, and felt it was worth volunteering for (if that's true!!) and that you're doing it for the experience.
In exchange you'd ask for a number of things:
1. That you work closely with their person to come up with a product you both like,
2. That you get to keep 50 or so samples of the finished product,
3. That they write you a letter of recommendation in which they do not mention a word about doing it for free, and
4. That they give you their word that next time they have real (i.e. for money) graphics projects for which they'd need to hire a graphic artist, that they let you have a crack at it.
I'd do this for a few weeks with a few such charities, and I think you'd have a number of fliers and recommendations that you can tout in the commercial world.
That's my $ 0.02,

I was in that business, you have to make cold calls, think of which industry would benefit most from your products, go and find the supply manager, purchasing manager, marketing manager, whoever you think will be recommending and deciding if they need your products or services.

Join social activities, keep tons of business card handy. join sporting activities specially golf. prepare digital samples, they are less costly.

Jenny, I am a printer.

I am willing to provide significantly discounted printing to you on brochures, and some other materials, so that you can have a little profit margin aside from your design fees.

why would I do this? From a business stand point....you have the potential to one day be bringing in a volume of work....which is a no brainer investment for me.

If you have any layouts that you've done on your computer...even if its just doodles or fooling around stuff, I'd like to take a look at it to get an idea of your style.

one of the greatest advantages you can give yourself, is to approach customers with the idea of creating a marketing solution for them. For example, often I will approach a company whom I know uses direct mail...usually its a piece I've received personally...I study it and see how I can improve it..then I design a new campaign and take it to them. I point out the elements that should make it successful and I help educate them a little on how to effectively use and measure direct mail.

A lot of people are doing digital catalogs on Flash Drives. Saves a ton of money on shipping from the printer to you and then from you to your clients. Also if you have updates or revisions to your catalog, you can easily reload the drives whereas with printed catalogs, you have to throw them in the trash and get new ones printed up. So there are some money saving opportunities, plus the flash drives are definitely a greener way to go if that's important to you.

Check out www.GreenThumbDrives.com/book to see the flipping book, and while you're there, have a look around at the drives.

Get some nice paper, and decide on wording. It's really easy to print your own, that's what we did. Make sure you have extra ink refills on hand. ;) It would suck to run out half way through and have faded/off-colored invitations. Good luck :)

I am not sure what you budget is, but here are a few ideas for invitations that you can order online and have them delivered to your home:

http://www.impressinprint.com/items.aspx?R=R&d_menu_key=582&d_category_key=835

Your other option is to just buy a nice paper (maybe something with a linen texture) and print your own. You can easily create layered cards by using two different types of paper and attaching them to each other with a box.
